We are delighted to honour the 2025 awardees at this EMS Annual Meeting. Our awardees will present their work during the event in Ljubljana. The awards will be handed over in three sessions:
- The EMS Media Awards are handed over during the Media Session ES2.1 on Wednesday, 10 September 2025.
- The Sergej Zilitinkevich Memorial Award Ceremony will be held during the session Atmospheric boundary-layer processes, turbulence and land-atmosphere interactions.
- All other awards are presented during the Awards Session on Monday, 8 September 2025 in the Linhart Hall. This session includes the Silver Medal Lecture.
The Closing reception on Friday, 12 Sep, 13:20 in the Grand Hall will include the announcement of the winner of this year's outstanding poster award.

Tromp Foundation Travel Award to Young Scientists (TFTAYS)

EMS Tromp Award for an outstanding achievement in biometeorology
Georgious Nikolaou Department of Agriculture in Cyprus, is the recipient of the EMS Tromp Award for Outstanding Achievement in Biometeorology 2025. He was selected for his publication Design of TETHYS: a greenhouse plant-smart water harvesting and air-cleaning system, published in July 2024 in the Springer journal Euro-Mediterranean Journal for Environmental Integration.

Outstanding poster award 2024
Albert Aparicio Garcia Meteorological Service of Catalonia (SMC), Barcelona won the Outstanding Poster Award 2024 with a poster presenting the work by him and his colleagues Anna Rius, Laura Barbería, Anna Miró, Juan Carlos Peña, and Adrián Ruiz, on Enhancing meteorological report access and response time: How the Meteorological Service of Catalonia addresses the rise in weather-related claims.
“The eye-catching style of this poster strongly meets impact and innovation criteria for the poster award. The committee appreciated the novel, intuitive approach this service offers via a web-based application. In particular, the committee valued the societal value this service offers for weather-related insurance claim requests.”

EMS Outreach and Communication Award
The EMS Outreach and Communication Award 2025 is presented to the magazine Segnali dal clima in Friuli Venezia Giulia. Through compelling storytelling enriched with explanations, glossaries, and real-world examples, the magazine guides non-experts along a clear narrative path – framing complex issues in a constructive way that informs, empowers, and helps ease anxiety.

EMS Journalistic Award
The recipient of the 2025 EMS Journalistic Award is Conor Purcell, a science journalist with a PhD in Earth Science. As a science journalist, Conor Purcell has explored weather and climate topics for leading publications. He regularly contributes to publications including Nature, Science, Scientific American, New Scientist, MIT’s Undark, and The Irish Times. Recently, he has highlighted how university staff are successfully challenging their institutions’ ties to the fossil fuel industry, showcasing the power of grass-roots activism in driving meaningful change. EMS Communicating Weather & Climate Award
The recipient of the 2025 EMS Communicating Weather & Climate Award is Jeremy Wilks of Euronews. The Climate Now series produced and presented by Jeremy Wilks updates Euronews audiences on how our planet is changing every month. Jeremy Wilks combines Copernicus climate data with engaging storytelling to reach a broad range of viewers. The programme is broadcast in 12 languages to over 160 countries worldwide across television and digital platforms. EMS Young Scientist Award
The recipient of the EMS Young Scientist Award 2025 is Timo Kelder, The Netherlands, working at the Climate Adaptation Servicesin Bussum, The Netherlands. He was nominated with the publication “How to stop being surprised by unprecedented weather”. This paper is a pioneering work that links disaster management and climate adaptation practices. EMS Technology Achievement Award
The EMS Technology Achievement Award for significant technology achievements and innovations in the field of meteorology and earth observation: The European Meteorological Society is awarding the EMS Technology Achievement Award 2025 to the Anemoi Framework. The Anemoi Framework is an excellent example of a European collaborative effort, which offers enhanced forecast accuracy through the use of advanced machine-learning methodologies. The flexible open-source approach enables various European stakeholders to further integrate AI in operational forecasting. EMS Outstanding Contribution Award
Prof. Dr. Heinke Schlünzen, Germany, the former Treasurer of the EMS, is receiving the 2025 EMS Outstanding Contribution Award.
For many years, Heinke Schlünzen has been the financial cornerstone of EMS, demonstrating remarkable professionalism, meticulous attention to detail, and an unwavering commitment to the EMS’s mission. Heinke’s tireless support for the EMS has left an indelible mark. Her contributions have not only strengthened the EMS but also empowered others.

EMS Silver Medal
Florence Rabier, ECMWF Director-General, will receive the EMS Silver Medal 2025 to recognize her ground-breaking scientific, academic and leadership career, marked by pioneering contributions to variational data assimilation of satellite observations in NWP, and her proactive role positioning ECMWF at the forefront of the machine learning revolution. Sergej Zilitinkevich Memorial Award 2025
Professor Mathias W. Rotach has been selected as the recipient of the 4th Sergej Zilitinkevich Memorial Award for his outstanding contributions to the field of boundary-layer meteorology. Mathias Rotach, based in the Department of Atmospheric and Cryospheric Sciences at the University of Innsbruck, is internationally recognized for his pioneering research on atmospheric boundary layer processes over complex terrains, including urban and mountainous environments. His work uniquely integrates theoretical development, observational campaigns, and numerical modelling, advancing both fundamental understanding and applied solutions in areas such as carbon cycling, snow science, hydrology, weather prediction, and public health.
